Overview

Enoch Pratt Free Library’s African American Department includes a variety of materials related to individual African Americans, as well as the African American experience in general. Some, but not all, materials are specific to Maryland.

Detailed Description of Collections

  • Books and Monographs – The collection, approximately 45,000 volumes, includes fiction and non fiction, detailing all aspects of the African American experience.
  • Microforms – Microfiche and microfilm provide access to materials and information that is often rare and or difficult to locate. These include historical newspapers, individual and organizational papers, and rare books.
  • Newspapers – Includes current and historic titles that examine and record events about African Americans and their communities, such as The Liberator and The Afro American.
  • Photographs – The photograph collection consists primarily of black and white images of African Americans in Baltimore and the surrounding area.
  • Primary Resources
  • Printed Ephemera – The ephemera files include more than 600 non-book items covering a wide range of subjects. These include church histories, calendars, political campaign literature, pamphlets, event programs, and other printed items.
  • Serials – The collection includes a variety of journals, magazines, and newsletters.
  • Vertical File Material – Contains more than 57,000 clippings from local newspapers as well as brochures, letters, obituaries, pamphlets, playbills, political campaign leaflets and more.
